Songwriting

Henry holds both a BA (Hons) in Popular Music and MA in Music from Leeds Conservatoire. During his undergraduate degree, on which he specialised in songwriting, he received the annual prizes for Popular Music and for Songwriting, graduating with an exemplary first for his final portfolio of compositions. For his Master’s degree, Henry explored electronic music production, graduating with distinction and a director’s prize in recognition of his achievements. He has been a guest lecturer on the subject of songwriting at numerous Higher Educational Institutions such as Leeds Conservatoire and Hull University.

Henry has released five albums of original material under his own name, as well as being part of numerous collaborative projects around Europe. With such a wealth of experience in composition and arrangement, Henry’s songwriting sessions are suitable for both the experienced and advanced songwriter or music producer, looking for guidance on their existing compositions, as well as the beginner. Sessions can focus on any number of areas, such as lyric writing, arrangement, or using Ableton/Logic Pro X, and will be tailored to the student’s interests and goals.

Henry Bateman’s songwriting has a maturity and nuance that suggests a seasoned pro with a life filled with experiences to draw on so it always comes as a shock that he is as young as he is. His music is always thoughtful and considered and he creates completely unique and emotional sonic landscapes with his beautifully crafted narratives and sound worlds. His craftsmanship and his attention to detail is clear in every musical decision he makes and the effort and work he puts in is an inspiration to all of us.

Guitar

A student of the classical guitar, at the age of eighteen, Henry received an Exhibition Award from Trinity Guildhall in recognition of an exceptional performance in his grade eight exam. He continued to study the classical guitar during his time at Leeds College of Music, under the tutelage of Peter Batchelar. Henry teaches the classical guitar to all ages and abilities privately, in schools, and online. He also teaches more rock-orientated styles, and can offer tuition on areas such as harmony and improvisation in his guitar sessions.

Henry specialises in an area of guitar playing known as ‘contemporary fingerstyle’, which in many ways sees the application of classical styles to the steel-strung guitar. Aged 16, Henry discovered the music of Michael Hedges – a true innovator of the instrument. Through the application of classical techniques, experimentation with methods of producing both harmonic and percussive sounds, and with tunings – Michael opened the door for a wealth of incredibly creative and innovative guitarists and composers to walk through.

Henry has studied Michael’s music, as well as that of some of the other guitarists who have followed in his wake such as Eric Roche, Thomas Leeb and Pierre Bensusan. Students wishing to explore this style of playing for the first time will be helped by having an intermediate experience on the classical guitar on in another fingerstyle-based genre.

As well as teaching privately, Henry currently also teaches guitar for the Gorse Academies Trust (Leeds) and the Areté Learning Trust (Northallerton). Henry has also taught guitar on the undergraduate Popular Music Performance course at Manchester’s BIMM University, as well as for many other schools and music services.

Henry’s lessons are fantastic because they cover a wide variety of styles and techniques. In addition to the graded classical guitar pieces, my son Jake is learning chords, strumming patterns, improvisation skills, and even the art of songwriting (both music and lyrics). This gave him the confidence to enter a songwriting competition. The great breadth of skills offered and taught by Henry means lessons are always fresh and interesting and are eagerly anticipated each week. He is a brilliant teacher, both patient and encouraging, and my son loves taking lessons with him.
